The Birmingham Section started 2015 with a political reception at the Murray Building Co. jobsite at the old Merita Bread Bakery. More than 150 members were in attendance with city and state officials. Everyone enjoyed a tour of the site as well as barbecue from Joe McNabb and Hendrix Chevrolet.

Recognizing Excellence

The Alabama AGC was named Large Chapter of the Year recently by AGC of America, the third time the Alabama chapter has earned that designation in the past decade.

“It's a great honor to have the work of our staff recognized for all they do,” said Alabama AGC CEO Billy Norrell. “The educational and legislative successes combined with the networking opportunities are things we pride ourselves on, and are services that are expected by Alabama AGC members. “

“We are grateful to the AGC of America for their support and recognition of our hard work, but the ultimate credit for this outstanding accomplishment goes to Alabama AGC’s contractor members who provide outstanding leadership.”

Alabama AGC turned 95 this year and it has a long history of excellence. In that time, Alabama AGC has:
-Become the largest and best non-residential construction trade association in Alabama

-Created the best, most financially sound workers’ compensation fund in the state, with more than $80 million in assets and $42 million in members’ equity

-Built a strong PAC and employ a full-time lobbyist, both of which provide crucial influence in Montgomery

-Become the only contractor-led organization that represents all contractors – open shop, union, GCs and specialty

-Remain the best bargain with dues among the lowest nationally without fundraising for special projects or to supplement the budget

The Alabama AGC also is a financial powerhouse with offices in Florence, Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile, a staff of 23, more than $10 million in reserves and a $3.5 million annual budget.

What does all this mean to our members and to the industry? Alabama AGC has a philosophy that the Board of Directors sets policy and the staff implements it. Those financial resources mean that we are the only construction trade association in Alabama that can implement the industry’s policies and affect real change.

Alabama AGC was first named Chapter of the Year in 2005 for the 2004 year, the second honor was earned in 2010 for the 2009 year.

Alabama AGC has been honored nationally for public relations six times: 2012, 2010, 2007, 2003, 1999 and 1998. Also, in 2004 the chapter was recognized with the national James E. Cashman Award for Best Membership Program.

So, when you choose to join Alabama AGC, you are joining the best non-residential construction trade association – not just in the state – but in the country.
