Crane Operator Certification Course Now Available at Jefferson State Community College

Jefferson State Community College has partnered with Crane U, an associate member of Alabama AGC and national provider of construction equipment training and inspection services, to offer crane operator certification courses.

The course is designed for students seeking a career in the construction industry as a certified crane operator. There is currently a shortage of trained construction workers and this course provides an excellent opportunity to gain skills that are very high in demand. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for certified crane operators is approximately $50,000.

What’s more, as of November 10, 2017, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) plans to begin requiring all crane operators on construction sites to be certified. Crane U has developed their own set of training materials specifically for the purpose of preparing students for the nationally accredited written and practical certification exams. Crane U currently uses this proven training method to provide crane operator training courses throughout the United States with around an 85% pass rate.

Jefferson State and Crane U are excited to be able to offer students more flexible options for paying for the course through this partnership.  This five day or six-week course includes classroom lecture-style training, hands-on time outside operating the crane, and written and practical certification exams administered on the final day. There is no prerequisite of previous crane experience or training. To become certified, students need a valid driver’s license and must undergo a U.S. Department of Transportation physical.

Students who successfully pass the written and practical exams will receive their Crane Operator Certification through Crane Institute Certification (CIC), which is valid for five years.

The crane operator certification course will be offered at the Jefferson State Community College campus located at 2601 Carson Road in Birmingham.
